Ideally you will have a month or more to plan a move, especially if it’s a cross country move or a move across several states. But sometimes things just don’t work out that way and you could find yourself in a position where you have to move within weeks, or days. Don’t panic. It is absolutely possible to move on short notice without the move being a disaster. Use these tips to get organized fast and make your move with short notice as stress free as possible:
Make Lists Lists are essential when you’re moving on short notice. It’s much too difficult to stay on task and get everything done without lists. And, if you have some friends or family that can help with the move you can delegate some of your lists to them to complete. When you first find out about your short notice move take a deep breath, then get the paper and pen and start organizing. Make a list of things you have to do to find a new home. Start another list of things you need to do to be ready to leave your current home. And make a list of all the phone numbers and addresses you will need throughout the move.
Get A Binder Started When you’re moving on almost no notice you will have a lot of paperwork that you need to keep track off but your current home will be in a state of half-packed chaos. To make sure that you don’t lose anything and to ensure that you have all the papers you need at your fingertips when you need them pick up a regular three ring binder, some dividers, and clear plastic document sleeves. Create sections in the binder for the new home, the old home, utilities, and so on. Put your documents in the sleeves and organize them into sections. That binder will be a life-saver during your move.
Time Has More Value Than Money When you have a lot of time to plan a move you can find ways to save money by doing things yourself. But when you have to move on short notice it’s worth it to pay a little extra and have other people take care of tasks. For example, most apartments will allow you to move out without cleaning the apartment if you pay a cleaning fee. They also will have the rugs shampooed for you although that will cost an additional fee. It’s worth paying to have the apartment management take care of those things so that you don’t have to do them yourself or find someone to do them.
Get Good Storage When you don’t have time to sort through your possessions and carefully pack them because you just have to get out of where you are at rent a climate controlled storage unit and move all of your stuff in there. Take it in clean trash bags if you need to. You can go through your stuff and pack it more carefully in the storage unit but when time is of the essence a storage unit will give you someplace safe to keep your stuff while you figure out your next move.
